Victory square

Several days ago I have visited Victory square which is located on the north of Saint-Petersburg. I live in this city for almost 8 years and I never attended it before. I passed by this square several times and I thought that it's just huge area with a spire on the center and nothing more... I mistook.
Square is surrounded by wide highway and if you want to come closer to the square you should cross a walking track. When I did it I was found that there was stairs! Which led down to a relatively smaller square. When I was going down I heard that highway noise was calming down. The square consisted of a monument on the center and a big ring with flares. Also walls were covered by texts about victory. On the one side of the ring was break with inscriptions "900 days". Through this break you can see enormous spire.
There were no people except Dasha and me. There were neither noise nor wind. It was very calm place and it was very strange filings because place was so huge but it was silent.
I like monuments and buildings which were built in the Soviet Union. Of course almost all USSR people lived in very modest dwellings. Moreover sometimes it was very bad and small flats. On the other hand majestic building of Moscow University seemed palace. Yes it was bright contrast and maybe dramatic hypocrisy to build palaces for only small part of society.

But anyway I'm glad that people of my native land built such legendary buildings and monuments. I'm not glad that modern Russian architecture is tasteless.
